Ingredients

  1. Wash and soak the lentils in warm water for at least 1 hour
  2. Pressure cook the lentils with 3 cups of water, a pinch of salt for up to 4 whistles at medium
  3. This will take approximately about 10-12 minutes
  4. In the mean time finely chop the onions and tomatoes
  5. Heat oil in a sauce pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chilli and curry leaves
  6. Let them splutter
  7. Add chopped ginger+garlic, onions and tomatoes. Sautxe9 for a minute
  8. Later add turmeric and the spice powders one by one. Sautx for 5 minutes on a low flame.
  9. Add around 1/2 cup of water and wait until the tomatoes are cooked through
  10. At this stage add the pressure cooked Brown Lentils
  11. Keep on stirring until the lentils are mixed completely with onion tomato masala
  12. Simmer the flame, add 1 cup water necessary and adjust salt
  13. Cover and let the mixture get cooked for up to 7-8 minutes
  14. Turn off the flame. Garnish the Brown Lentil dal with coriander leaves
  15. Serve this tangy and tasty warm dal along with a bowl of Rice
